Photos # I'm not keeping track anymore - Tone

For tonal affinity I wanted to try to break out of thinking about capturing tone with black and white and instead look for vibrant colors that shared a sort of tonal affinity. I feel like I was relatively successful and, even though the colors aren't the exact same, I feel like the shot gives a sort of unity to the space because of the tonal affinity present.

I quite like the effect that the contrast of tone has in this picture. I won't give tone all the credit, I think that the deep space and diagonal lines also play into it, but the darkness both surrounding and integrated into the brighter seats give an ominous feeling, whereas is the tone had been consistent I think that even with the other elements, the intensity would not be quite so high.

I struggled for a bit to get this shot of noncoincidence. I originally tried getting just a backlit silhouette and, while this proved fairly simple, I had no outside subject and I quickly decided that my silhouette is stupid. So to avoid having to deal with it, I tried laying down instead. I was initially worried that the spill light would reveal too much information, but I actually really like the effect; rather than just a silhouette, the contrasting light and dark on the body make a much more dynamic and interesting image.

Great job again! I love these photos. I think you did a great job of capturing tonal affinity with the first picture - it reminds me of the still from American Hustle we looked at in class. It could have been interesting had you chosen to use a different camera angle to either emphasize or downplay the red of the woman's blazer with the red of the carpet - we don't see a lot of the carpet as it is, but just enough to know that it's red - just something to think about. I agree that the contrasting tone gives the second photo an ominous feeling, almost Phantom of the Opera vibes. I wonder if it might have been…
